BrewBlogger 2.3.1 Available

BrewBlogger 2.3.1 is now available at SourceForge and Google Code. This is a small release that fixes some bugs and add some additional user-requested functionality and tools such as:

  • A hydrometer correction calculator (thanks to Kevin Masaryk for this one).
  • The ability to update logs or recipes as "Featured" (admins only) or "Archived" from a single screen.
  • The ability to narrow lists of logs or recipes by style by clicking on the style name

BrewBlogger 2.3 is Available

After a month-long beta period, the full version of BrewBlogger 2.3 is now available at SourceForge and Google Code. A big thanks goes out to those who tested the BETA version of BB2.3. Special thanks to Bruce Buerger of the Beer Barons of Milwaukee and Patrick Kennedy for their exceptionally thorough testing. The full-version release is a much stronger package with everyone's dedicated help!

New features of BrewBlogger 2.3 include:

  • Print competition entry forms and bottle labels based upon brewblog entry. No more writing out those looooong forms by hand!
  • Automatic detection of mobile browsers.
    • If you are viewing a BrewBlogger 2.3 installation from a web-enabled phone, your data will appear in an easy-to-read, mobile friendly layout.
  • Customizable Mash Profiles with multiple steps (with over 20 pre-loaded profiles).
  • Customizable Water Profiles (with nine pre-loaded profiles).
  • Customizable Yeast Profiles (with over 170 pre-loaded yeast strains from 13 labs).
  • Customizable Equipment Profiles (with 10 pre-loaded profiles).
  • Updated Miscellaneous ingredient database.
  • Update of BrewBlog and Recipe database tables to utilize BeerXML standard.
    • This will make BrewBlogger more complementary to desktop-based applications like BeerSmith that export BeerXML files.
  • Ability for users to choose the bitterness formula when calculating and displaying logs and recipes.
  • Ability to import BeerXML files into a BrewBlog (previously, users could only import to recipes).
  • Ability to display "featured" recipes or BrewBlogs at the top of lists.
  • Ability to archive recipes or BrewBlogs.
  • Customizable menu text. No longer are you stuck with "BrewBlogs" or "Recipes."
  • More refined ingredient administration for fine-tuning of recipe formulation.
  • Reworked water amounts calculator for more accuracy - thanks Kevin!
  • User-level defaults for equipment profiles, mash profiles, water profiles, boil time, batch size, and bitterness formula.
  • Two new, wider-formatted themes: Haze (the theme used for this site) and Midas.

BrewBlogger 2.3.1 is a easy to set up, easy to use, browser-based homebrew log. It is a PHP/MySQL-based system that provides today's brewer not only a fast and easy way to record their brewing activities, but also forum to share their zymurgistic efforts and expertise with the homebrewing community around the world.

BrewBlogger 2.3.1 was developed by brewing and computer geek Geoff Humphrey for zkdigital.com - mainly at his own whim and evolving need.

What's the catch?

There is no catch. BrewBlogger something I built because I wanted an easy way to record my beer brewing activities. There was nothing web-based out there, so I made one myself.

What do I need to set up BrewBlogger 2.3.1

You will need to have a website server with at least PHP 5 and MySQL 4 installed - most web hosting companies do feature PHP and MySQL. BrewBlogger's included instructions will assume that these open source programs are already installed.

From there, installation is easy. Simply add a few lines of configuration code, upload the BrewBlogger 2.3.1 files to your web server, and install the backend database. Complete instructions are included with the download.

Do I need programming experience to use BrewBlogger 2.3.1?

No. Entry is as simple as using any commercially available blog programs or Microsoft Word. Through a great piece of open source software called TinyMCE, text entry is a snap.
